Daily Press/Press Daily Artwork

Some ideas take longer to brew than others when creating artwork. Daily Press/Press Daily is a new artwork I created that is quite different from what I have been doing. My brain took its time to let the elements of this artwork come together. The base structure is a letterpress drawer that used to hold typeset pieces for printing. In the past, newspapers were printed by hand with each letter or image being set into the press. The drawers held the many pieces needed to create an article. That is where “Daily Press” comes into the title of the artwork.

Last year, I was chosen to create Teton Tranquility, a commissioned artwork for Sage Living, a new assisted living facility that was being built in Jackson, WY. Specific themes were selected for different areas of the facility. My design is an abstracted landscape of the local Teton mountains. Once the design was approved, I started work on the piece.

This past weekend I was teaching an art workshop for Sun Valley Museum of Art in Hailey, Idaho. It is the first in-person workshop I have taught in over a year, due to the pandemic. Following Covid protocols, the class size was limited and we all wore masks the entire time.

In the autumn of 2020, I was fortunate to be an artist-in-residence at Flathead Lake Biological Station in Montana. It was an inspirational time. Now at home, I continue to make art based on the area. Portrait of Flathead Lake is an artwork I recently finished, utilizing information I learned during my residency of factors contributing to the lake’s pristine nature. Flathead lake is one of the cleanest fresh water lakes in the world.

Pack for an Artist Residency- Montana Residency – Part 1

During the month of October I was an artist-in-residence at Flathead Lake Biological Station in Montana. How do I pack for an artist residency?

 

It is always a daunting task figuring out what art supplies to bring with me. Working with fabrics makes it a little bit harder than just bringing a box of paints and some canvases. I have to bring a sewing machine, ironing board & iron, cutting mat and cutting tools, rulers, threads, etc. The hardest part is narrowing down which fabrics to bring. It’s not like I can just mix a new color if I don’t have one. Since I like to be inspired by the location, I don’t always have an exact plan of what I’ll be doing and know what colors I want/need.

Boise Weekly Art Auction 2020

The Boise Weekly is our independent weekly newspaper. Local artists donate artworks that grace the cover each week. Every year the paper hosts the Boise Weekly Cover Art Auction. Artworks are auctioned off with a percentage of the sale going to the artist and the remainder going to the paper’s art grants fund. Then, the grants are given back to arts organizations and artists in the community.READ MORE

The 100 Day Project Continues

I am now about 3/4 of the way through the 100 Day Project, a daily art commitment. At first, I started painting in a small sketchbook (about 5-1/2″ x 5-1/2″ square). 100 Day Art Project

When the stay-at-home orders from the governor started, I thought, “Now I will have some time to do the things that I have been wanting to do.” Since I work from home normally, it isn’t that much different. But I was thinking the rest of the world is going to have to slow down and I do not have to worry about doing so many things to try to catch up. I had great ideas about art experiments to try, studio cleaning and being very productive in the studio. A couple of months in, and none of that has happened! To remedy that, I committed to a 100 day art project.
