This past September I was an artist-in-residence at Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona. Although I have attended other residencies, this was my first time at a national park. I had not ever visited the park before going to the residency. It is an amazing geological landscape with different things to see throughout the park.

I am so grateful to be have been able to live within the park, as there are no camping grounds or lodging for the public within the park. It made it much easier to explore and maximize my time there without having to drive in and out everyday. I stayed in a small casita and worked in the one room living space. There was also a tiny kitchen and bathroom.

Since I drove to Arizona, I was able to bring my sewing machine, ironing board, extra table, portable design wall and fabrics, among other supplies. My plan was to work on some small fabric pieces and do tiny paintings (3″ x 3″) on my hikes.

I spent the majority of my time cycling and hiking the park. There is only one road running north/south through the park. It is about 28 miles from the north entrance to the south entrance. As I was staying near the north entrance, I did have to drive within the park to get to different areas. There was lots to explore with many different colors and formations within the park. I have gathered lots of inspiration for future artworks.
